Willem Hendrik Zwart is one of the most famous Dutch organists of the last century. Not only did he enjoy great fame as a church organist, but also his concerts and his work as a choir conductor made a great impression. The many records and CDs that have been recorded by him testify to this interest.
Willem Hendrik Zwart was born in Zaandam, the son of organist Jan Zwart. He received his first organ lessons from his father. Later he studied at the conservatories in Amsterdam and Utrecht with Simon C. Jansen, George Stam, Willem Mudde and Stoffel van Viegen.
In 1945 he was appointed organist in Coevorden, while still a student. This was followed in 1952 by an appointment as organist of the Reformed Zion Church in Groningen. From 1954 to 1995 he was organist of the Bovenkerk in Kampen. In addition to his work as an organist, he was also active as a choral conductor. He has published several arrangements of psalms and sacred songs, and he has published books and articles on organs and organ music. His playing has been recorded on several LPs and CDs.
