Yta van der Zwaag started playing the oboe at the age of 14. In her hometown Leeuwarden she received her first oboe lessons from Jan Harshagen, principal oboist of the then Frysk Orkest.

After high school, she moved to The Hague where she studied at the Royal Conservatoire with Jan Spronk and Frank Minderaa. She graduated in 1992. During her studies, she gained orchestral experience with the Regional and National Youth Orchestras, with which she toured to Czechoslovakia, England and Italy. She has played in the orchestras of several musicals, including Cats, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and My Fair Lady. In recent years she has also made concert tours to Israel, Belgium, England, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

At the moment she regularly participates in projects of various accompaniment orchestras such as the Great National String Orchestra, the Randstad Accompaniment Orchestra, and the Erasmus Consort. She is also a much sought-after soloist with choirs, CD, radio and TV recordings.
