Wout van Andel grew up as the ninth of twelve children in a large Reformed family. His father was a minister. He received his first piano lessons at the age of four. At eleven, he switched to the organ and took lessons from Jan Brandwijk. After this, he briefly studied electrical engineering in Eindhoven but chose to enter the music world. He completed his professional studies at the Utrecht Conservatory with Nico van den Hooven and later with Ewald Kooiman in Amsterdam.
In 1978, Wout van Andel won the biennial International Rijnstreek Organ Competition in Nijmegen. After this, he was appointed organist of a large number of Protestant churches, including the Dorpskerk and Marcuskerk in Leusden and the Grote Kerk and Immanuelkerk in Driebergen. From December 2012 until his retirement in December 2019, he was the permanent organist of the Grote Kerk in Apeldoorn. In addition, as a composer, he created choral arrangements of the 491 hymns and choral arrangements of the 150 psalms. He is also a co-editor of the songbook *Hoop van alle volken*, for which he wrote various accompaniments. As an organ teacher, he taught in Apeldoorn, Leusden, and Woudenberg. He was also a methodology lecturer at the Schumann Academy.
