The School Orchestra
Our school orchestra has been a school orchestra for five years now. This year marks our fifth anniversary. Five years ago, we started as a supplement to the school choir. We also performed on special occasions. For example, in the spring of 1995, we played at a national conference at our school, where Mrs. Netelenbos spoke. She was the State Secretary for Education at the time. Over the last three years, the orchestra has become more independent. The highlights of each year were the parent-teacher conferences, where we played psalms, hymns, and classical pieces. The performances during the open house were of a different nature, featuring folk songs and children's songs.
In recent years, a variety of instruments have participated. Flutes (transverse flutes and recorders) have consistently been in the majority. We also occasionally played more unusual instruments, such as horn, clarinet, bassoon, viola, and harp.
Few requirements were placed on members. Knowledge of musical notation was practically the only requirement. So anyone who played an instrument could become a member. This resulted in a wide variety of members. Some were advanced musicians, while others had barely had any lessons on their instruments.
Initially, practice was only during breaks. In the last year, it was also possible to practice during lesson time.
