Since its foundation in 1973, Hamberg - who has since moved from Ommen to the Polenweg in Hardenberg - has been the choir's permanent musical accompanist. In 1992, he took over the conductorship from Jan Tijhuis. Riekus Hamberg believes that after 17 years, he should now hand over the baton to someone else. According to PR man Egbert Wendt, the other person is already known, but his name cannot be announced until next week, because the contract still has to be signed.
Under the direction of Riekus Hamberg, the choir has performed various works with or without orchestral accompaniment, such as Vivaldi's Gloria, Graun's Der Tod Jesu and Mozart's Krönungsmesse. Concerts in collaboration with other choirs from the region and many domestic and foreign tours have been on the programme. Almost every year, at the request of the NCRV, the choir participates in the radio program Woord op Zondag, and in 1997 the choir was asked by the NCRV to participate in TV recordings of the program 'Viering' in Utrecht. In April of this year, the choir performed 'The Crucifixion' by J. Stainer in collaboration with ninety guest singers as a project choir. Thanks in part to Riekus Hamberg, this was a great success.
