More than 158 times played this month

The Maxwell Quartet blends a refined approach to classical repertoire with a deep commitment to Scottish folk traditions, expanding the string quartet canon through innovative projects. Their first two Linn recordings paired Haydn quartets with the players’ own folk-inspired compositions, with the first reaching number three in the classical charts.

They perform regularly at leading UK and European venues and festivals, including Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw and major festivals, and have toured the United States annually since their sold-out debut in 2019.

Recent projects include a new commission by Linda Buckley with bagpiper Brìghde Chaimbeul, premiered at Celtic Connections and toured across Europe, and Worksongs, exploring the music of Scotland’s historic industries. Their 2023 album Gather spans Scottish music from medieval plainchant to contemporary compositions.

Formed in 2010 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the quartet has held residencies across the UK and collaborates widely with artists across musical and artistic disciplines.
