Luigi Piovano received his diploma at the age of 17 with Radu Aldulescu and has appeared in chamber music concerts with artists such as Sawallisch, Chung, Pollini, Lonquich, Sitkovetsky, Kavakos and the Labèque sisters.

He has played as a soloist under the direction of Chung, Nagano and Pletnev. Since 2007 he has been playing regularly in a duo with Antonio Pappano.

For more than 20 years he has been first cello with the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Active also as a conductor, from 2012 he has been musical director of the Magna Grecia Orchestra and, since 2013, at the head of the Archi di Santa Cecilia.
