Leon Koppelman was born on September 28, 1986, in Vriezenveen. He began his pan flute studies at the age of 11 with Gerard Rijken van Olst at the music school in Almelo, where he graduated with honors on his D-diploma at the age of 17. He then studied for several more years with Gerard Rijken van Olst and with the renowned pan flutist Nicolae Pirvu.
He plays various pan flutes, including the soprano-alto pan flute, the tenor pan flute, the concert pan flute, and the contrabass pan flute. The pan flutes he plays are sourced from Romania and are made by the pan flute builder Ion Preda. The flutes are characterized by a warm, powerful, and clear tone (for more information on this, see Pan Flute).
Leon regularly collaborates on concerts with choirs and other musicians. Additionally, he has several CDs to his name, including the CD series 'Leon in concert.' He also frequently participates in live CD recordings.
