Leander Schoormans (1999) began his musical career as a boy soprano with the Sacramentskoor (now Kooracademie) Breda. Among other projects, he sang in Vaughan Williams’ Hodie, several performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Mariss Jansons. He has also sung and continues to sing with various project choirs, including the Domcantorij in Utrecht.
In 2021, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the Academy of Music Education in Tilburg, where he also studied organ with Ruud Huijbregts. During his studies, he focused on conducting through a minor programme and the Kurt Thomas Conducting Course. In 2023, he completed a Master’s degree in Music Education based on the Kodály concept at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. His thesis explored the history of the method of musical notation in Dutch primary schools.
As a composer, Leander is equally active. In January 2025, his Organ Concerto in D minor received its premiere. The nineteen-minute work is scored for two trumpets, timpani, strings, and organ, and is available to listen to on YouTube.
As a music educator, he currently works, among other places, with the Haags Matrozenkoor and at the Cathedral Choir School in Utrecht. He is also cantor at St Anthony’s Cathedral in Breda.
Alongside teaching and performing, Leander is involved in promoting, reviving, and researching the musical history of the Dutch Republic (1650–1800).
