John Propitius (Baarn, 1953) is a Dutch organist and composer for the organ. He began his organ studies with Gijsbert Brinks and later studied under Jaap Zwart Sr. At the Utrecht Conservatory, he was taught by Nico van Hooven and Jan Welmers.
At the age of 16, Propitius was appointed organist of the Dutch Reformed Calvijn Church in Baarn. In 1977, he became the organist of the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Barneveld, and from 1997, he served as organist of the Reformed Church (liberated) in Driebergen.
Propitius is especially known for his improvisations on psalms and sacred hymns, in which he always sought to musically express the meaning of the lyrics. In addition to his work as an organist, he was active as a conductor of several choirs, including the Christian Mixed Ichthus Choir in Soest and the Christian Mixed and Children’s Choir Deo Juvante in Kesteren (until June 2007).
He made various LP and CD recordings. In 2009, Propitius retired from giving organ concerts due to health reasons.
