Jan Verzaal was born on 16 March 1960 in Ter-Aar. From the age of seven to nine he received recorder lessons. When he was nine years old he started his organ studies with his father, soon followed by lessons from Mr. Haak from Nieuwkoop. After a number of years he continued his organ studies with respectively Huug Vis from Ter-Aar, Jaap Brons from Leiden, and Theo Griekspoor from Aalsmeer. At the age of twelve he regularly played church services in the Dutch Reformed Church in Ter-Aar, after which he became organist in Aarlanderveen and Nieuwveen. In 1986 he moved to Tiel, where he is currently organist in the Grote of St. Maartenskerk there. In 1989 and 1990 he took lessons from the well-known organist John Propitius in Barneveld.
