Jaap Zwart (1955) grew up in a musical family. He received his first music lessons from his father, Jaap Zwart (1924-2001). He studied piano and organ at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with a major in Music Theory.
At the Conservatory of Amsterdam, he is a teacher within the department for the major in theory. As part of the international program Music as a Subject at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he gives workshops in vocal harmony and improvisation. This program is based on the work and philosophy of the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.
As a concert organist, Jaap Zwart programs a wide repertoire. One of his specialties is performing relatively unknown organ music from the 19th and 20th centuries. As a church organist, he is associated with the Grote or Andreaskerk in Hattem and the Grote Kerk in Harderwijk.
Jaap Zwart is a highly sought-after accompanist, also as a pianist. Several CDs of his playing have been released, including recordings on the Bätz organs of the Dom Church in Utrecht and the Great Churches of Gorinchem and Harderwijk. In 2014, a CD was released on which he plays the restored Adema organ of the Calixtus Basilica in Groenlo. At the end of 2019, the CD Beresjiet, featuring works by Johan Haaksma, was released.
