Henk was born in 1948 in Rotterdam. He received his first lessons at home on the harmonium from a local amateur organist. Later, he received his "real" lessons with the late Wim Kooij on the pipe organ in Rotterdam's Bergsingel Church.
In 1970, he began studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory, majoring in school music and subordinate subjects in organ (Jet Dubbeldam) and piano (Jacques de Monchy). However, De Gelder discontinued his studies in 1974. He later resumed his studies and pursued the State Examination for organ, obtaining a teaching certificate B, with private lessons from Arie J. Keijzer. This study was awarded with a diploma in June 1977. De Gelder then studied with Arie J. Keijer at the Rotterdam Conservatory and earned the Performing Musician diploma with a "note for improvisation" (June 1979). De Gelder then continued his studies. for the main subject of school music. Teaching certificate B.
From 1968 to 1974, De Gelder was church organist in the Reformed Church of South Rotterdam, while from 1970 to 1974 he was also organist at the Ikazia Hospital in South Rotterdam. From 1975 to 1981, he was organist of the Reformed Church of Goudswaard. Always active in the field of music, De Gelder has given "improvisation" courses for amateur church organists for several years and conducts various choirs.
He also does a lot of work within the V.O.GG (Association of Organists of the Reformed Churches).
