About Deo Cantemus
The Christian mixed choir Deo Cantemus from Ridderkerk
Deo Cantemus, originally a Rotterdam choir, founded in 1935, has now existed for 90 years (7 November). The choir currently has around 90 members. This makes 'Deo Cantemus' one of the larger choirs in the Netherlands. Ridderkerk has been its home base since 2024.
The enormous growth started in 1951, when Arie Pronk took over the leadership. In its heyday, there were around 360 members. After the death of Arie Pronk in 1991, the choir found a capable successor in the person of Cor de Haan. After leading the choir with great passion and enthusiasm for 25 years, Cor de Haan decided to end his musical career. As of 1 January 2016, the choir has been led by conductor Hans van Blijderveen.
'Deo Cantemus' wants to express the message of the Gospel with the spiritual song. With this song, the choir wants to come close to people in order to convey encouragement, comfort and joy, in the hope and with the desire that people feel supported by the texts and the music.
The choir is best known for the Christmas Doelen concerts, which have been held every year since 1966 in the Rotterdam concert hall De Doelen. In addition, 'Deo Cantemus' has performed a lot in the Netherlands, but also abroad. For example, there have been choir trips to Belgium, England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, America, Canada and Israel.
In addition to the choir trips, the media (including YouTube) and via the sound carriers, 'Deo Cantemus' is also to be heard during the performances and collaborations. 'Deo Cantemus' sings in churches, but also in care centers.
'Deo Cantemus' is grateful for the many opportunities that the choir has received. For 90 years, we have been able to sing of God's love for people: in and outside the city of Rotterdam. The wish for the future is to be able to continue this, true to the mission as expressed in the name of the choir. 'Deo Cantemus', that is: singing to the glory of God. Do you love singing and do you also want to be part of this choir, then sign up!
