Ben de Raaf was born in 1961 in Rotterdam. In 1979, he began working with the police. He hopes to retire at the end of 2025. As a police officer, he has drawn on his experiences to write youth books.

His first book, On Patrol, was published in 1999. It contained columns for the family magazine TERDEGE, written under the pseudonym Herman Dad. Since then, he has published more than 40 books.

Well-known are the 19 volumes of the police series featuring the experiences of Roel Westland. These books are based on real criminal cases. The stories are set in recognizable Rotterdam locations, and the characters in the books are real people, with the exception of Roel Westland. The books also contain a Christian message.

The books in the police series have been narrated by the author himself and can be listened to on Familystream. In addition to this series, he has also written a series of books about the police dog Bardo. After a short break from writing, the author picked up the pen again, and new installments in this series were released in 2023 and 2024.
